Safety Day

On Wednesday, August 15, the Club welcomed Officer Lenny Gosselin of the K-9 unit from the Bellingham Police Department, the Blackstone Police Department and the Blackstone Fire Department to take part in a Safety Day for the members of the summer program.

In the morning members enjoyed listening to Officer Gosselin of the K-9 unit talk about safety when around dogs and helpful hints of how to avoid getting bit by a dog.  He told our members about the different dogs a police department may have and that each dog has a different job, whether to chase criminals, find illegal substances, find missing children or finding the cause of a fire.  Officer Gosselin also showed the members his two dogs that help him on a daily basis when working for the Bellingham Police Department.  He let one of his dogs sniff members backpacks to show how sensitive a dog’s sense of smell is.  The dog found a member’s lunch in one of the backpacks and became excited about smelling some yummy snacks.

Later in the afternoon, members enjoyed watching two firetrucks, a police car and tank truck enter the Club.  Blackstone firemen extended the ladder from the firetruck and our members were in awe of how high the ladder can go.  Our members were allowed to sit in the firetrucks where our Blackstone Firemen actually sit when rushing to an emergency.  The members were also allowed to blow the horn and try on a fireman’s protective gear.  There was a water game, created by the firemen where two teams would roll a ball from start to finish using the water from the firehose. Other members amused themselves by sitting in the front and back of the police car where an officer was more than happy to answer any questions the children might have.

The Club would like to thank the Bellingham Police Department and Officer Gosselin of the K-9 Unit, the Blackstone Police Department and the Blackstone Fire Department for entertaining our members and staff and teaching the children about the importance of being safe.
